Brecel beats Van Hove in first Belgium Ranking Final.
Last weekend the first Belgium Ranking of the season was played in Play Ball (Hasselt) and Riley Inn (Genk). The tournament was a great success with 141 participants.
The level of play was of a very high standard with a lot of high breaks. Brecel had the high break of a 140. He made a total of 5 century breaks and another 5 over 70 breaks in the event.
In the last 32 there was already the interesting clash of Yvan Van Velthoven (1) and reigning Belgium Champion Luca Brecel. The youngster showed his good form and sent Yvan home with 3-0.
In the last 16 Alain Vandersteen and Mario Van Herk who are representing Belgium in the team and 6-reds IBSF World Championchips in Carlow at the end of this month ended up playing each other. In a very close fought battle Mario emerged as the 3-2 victor. Also in the last 16 former under 21 international Jurian Heusdens played seed nr 4 Tomasz Skalski. Tomasz took a 2-0 leed starting with a 78 in the 1st frame before Jurian replied in the 3th frame with a magical 120 break but then Tomasz produced a 68 break to close the match in the 4th frame to win 3-1.
The quarter finals threw up some interesting matches with all top seeds progressing to the semi finals. David Mens surpassed all expectations reaching the quarters where he lost 4-1 to Skalski. Although the scoreline does not reflect the closeness of the frames as David had breaks of 63,55 and 47.
Both semis where played to a decider . Brecel won 4-3 against Tomasz Skalski (4) (32-69, 128(128)-6, 105(51)-9, 69(69)-0, 46-54, 22-62, 93(71)-1) and Kevin Van Hove (2) beat Peter Bullen ( 3) with 4-3. (78-29, 1-64(50), 11-105(92), 71-21, 59-29, 17-84(68), 74(51)-15)
The final produced some sublime snooker from main tour player Luca Brecel. Luca had breaks of 140,106,90,89 and 68 where he outclassed the 2007 European Champion Kevin Van Hove with a scoreline of 5-0.
